What is Leucorrhea ?


Leucorrhea is whitish, greenish or slightly yellowish discharge from vagina.  Almost all women experience vaginal discharge, which is white and odourless and this is natural fuction of the body to maintain a healthy vagina and flush out harmful micro-organisms. It is normal in adolescent girls too. But if there is any kind of infection, the discharge changes its colour and becomes smelly.

Types of Leucorrhea:

Physiologic: This is considered a normal state where the discharge can be due to a change in one’s hormonal levels. Usually it is seen in the early stages of pregnancy, state of sexual excitement, a sign of puberty for young girls.
Inflammatory or pathological: In this case the discharge can be yellow in color and have a foul smell. It could be caused due to any of the infections.
Cervicitis One of the most common symptoms of this condition is pain in the lower back. Caused due to an inflammation in the uterine cervix, this inflammation is usually due to an STD.
Vaginal yeast infection: Also known as candidiasis or vaginal yeast infection, it is most often seen in women who are diabetic, pregnant, on antibiotics or birth control pills.
Trichomonal Vaginitis: Trichomoniasis is usually accompanied by a  yellow discharge and itching. The probable causes are STD.

Vaginal infections from Yeast, also called Candida, a type of fungi, Gardnerella, a type of bacteria found normally in the female genital tract and Trichomonas, a single celled organism are major cause of leucorrhea.

Sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea or chlamydia also can cause vaginal discharge or leucorrhea.

Douches, pads or tampons; diabetes; or low estrogen levels as in menopause trigger leucorrhea.

Stress, Excessive intake of oily, spicy and unhealthy junk food.   

Hormonal imbalance caused due to severe mental stress and trauma too can cause leucorrhoea in young girls.       

Leucorreha is also cuased due to overindulgence in sexual activity.
Improper vaginal hygiene can cause leucorrhoea.
